The International Publishing Company, or IPC for short, is one of the United Kingdom’s leading magazine publishers. Originally founded in 1963 by the collaborative work of three companies; ‘George Newnes’, ‘Odhams Press’ and ‘Fleetway Publications’, the company went through many changes in the years to follow; they bought the Daily Mirror in 1968 and in turn became the IPC-Mirror Group. In 1970 ‘Reed International’ bought the company out, and four years later, in 1974, split the company into two parallel groups; ’IPC’, which dealt with magazine publications and ‘Mirror Group Newspapers’ for newspaper publications. In the early 1990’s IPC launched ‘Loaded’ which inspired a wave of various ‘lads mags’ from rival media companies. The company was later renamed in 2000 to IPC Media, the following year the company was sold to ‘Time Inc.’ The magazine publishing division of Time Warner.
IPC Media organises the magazines it creates into five separate divisions; Connect, Inspire, Ignite!, SouthBank and TX; also there is the Marketforce division which is the UK’s largest magazine distribution business. IPC publishes multiple leading magazines from all market areas, such magazines as ‘NME’, ‘Nuts’ and ‘Woman’s Own’. This shows that IPC Media involves itself with as many possible target audiences as it can; it has a magazine to cater for most walks of life. They currently have a portfolio which sells roughly 350 million copies annually, and their magazines are reputed as the leading magazines in their field of appeal.
